More than half of all phones sold in the third quarter of 2013 were smartphones, according to market research firm Gartner. The report reveals that out of 455.6 million units sold to end users, 55 percent or 250.2 million of them were smartphones. Total mobile phone sales increased by 5.7 percent while smartphone sales grew by 45.8 percent over the same period last year. Samsung accounted for a whopping 32.1 percent of all smartphones sold in the quarter with 80.36 million units.

Android now accounts for 81.9 percent of the smartphone OS market share extending its lead over iOS that now accounts for 12.1 percent. Windows Phone has cemented its place as the third most popular smartphone OS with 3.6 percent market share, trouncing BlackBerry, which now has just 1.8 percent marketshare in terms of OS.

Lenovo came across as a surprise third largest smartphone vendor with 5.1 percent market share, just ahead of LG with 4.8 percent market share. However, Gartner's Anshul Gupta believes that Lenovo could limit its growth prospects due to its reliance on its home market with China accounting for 95 percent of its over all sales.
