BlackBerry is reportedly preparing to launch a new firmware upgrade for its BB10 OS smartphones including the Z10 and Z30 that will allow Andorid apps to run natively on the platform for the first time.
According to a report from Good e-Reader , BlackBerry launched a charm offensive at last week's CES trade show in Las Vegas in order to get top-tier Android software development companies on board.
'at least four different game development companies' confirmed to that they had been approached by Blackberry to add their software into a new section of its Blackberry World app store in advance of the impending firmware upgrade.
Good e-Reader also reported that 'In the near future Blackberry will be releasing a new firmware update that will allow users to install Android apps (apk) files directly on their phone. To gear up for this transition, Blackberry will be offering Android apps for direct download in their online app store.
Apparently an early build of this update was tested by Good e-Reader on the BlackBerry Z10, which let them install their own Good e-Reader App Store, among others.
The 10.3 firmware update is expected to allow native Android apps to run on BlackBerry handsets including the Q5, Q10, Z10 and Z30. While no release date has been announced by BlackBerry, The Good e-Reader reported that development work 'is basically all done'. However, the smartphone maker is holding back its release until it 'at least 10,000' Android apps in its library.
