BlackBerry Z10 drops to £160 on Pay As You Go

The BlackBerry Z10 smartphone has received a significant price cut to just £160 on Pay As You Go, as its creator struggles to interest consumers.

Released in January last year in the UK as the company's first major smartphone overhaul, ditching the traditional physical keyboard for a touch-screen interface and a brand new BlackBerry 10 operating system, the Z10 reviewed fairly well - even at its original price of £520. With the power and performance of its rivals ever-increasing, however, sales of the device have been slow and prompted numerous unofficial price cuts for the handset - a process which only accelerated when the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) app launched for iPhone and Android late last year.

Now mobile retailer The Carphone Warehouse has dropped the price of the handset to just £159.95 for new Pay-As-You-Go customers or £149.95 for those upgrading from an older handset. The deal is available on Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and O2, and includes the choice of BlackBerry Z10 in black or white finishes.

It's a significant discount for a handset not that old - and one which BlackBerry sells direct for £349. It is, however, indicative of the troubles endured by the company, which reported in December a third-quarter loss of £2.7 billion based on handset sales of 1.9 million - down from 3.7 million in the previous quarter. It's also looking a little dated compared to the newer BlackBerry Z30 as well.

The deal is available now from The Carphone Warehouse, with delivery due on the 20th of January.
