POLICE will be actively targeting drivers who use hand-held mobile phones according to Officer in Charge of the Whitsunday Station, Acting Senior Sergeant Nathan Blain.
Snr Sgt Blain said police were specifically targeting mobile phones because of the serious risk they caused to road users due to driver distraction.
'Police will be conducting both uniform and plain clothes patrols to locate offenders,' he said.
'If you are caught driving whilst using a mobile phone you will be fined $330 and lose three demerit points.'
Snr Sgt Blain said it was also important to remember there was a ban on all mobile phone use (including hands-free) for learner drivers and P1 provisional drivers under 25 years of age, P1 probationary licence holders and P1 restricted licence holders who hold a restricted licence because of a young driver disqualification offence.
'There is also a ban on mobile phone use on loudspeaker function for supervisors and passengers of these drivers,' he said.
Snr Sgt Blain recommends that drivers put their phones in places that are hard to access, such as the glove box or boot, to remove the temptation of using them.
'If you do need to use your phone then find a safe place to pull over and stop to make the call,' he said.
'Taking a phone call while driving is not worth the loss of yours, a family member or someone else's life.'
