Mobile phones should be in the boot when driving

The campaign marks Road Safety Week and the 10th anniversary of the ban on using hand-held phones while driving

Drivers should put their phone in the car boot to avoid distraction, safety experts say today.

The advice is issued as police start a blitz on people using mobiles at the wheel.

The campaign marks Road Safety Week and the 10th anniversary of the ban on using hand-held phones while driving.

Julie Townsend, of the Brake charity, said: 'We're calling on drivers to tune into road safety - turn off your phone or put it in the boot.'

Smartphones are specially tempting. Suzette Davenport, Gloucestershire Deputy Chief Constable, said: 'As technology has advanced, we've seen a change in the behaviour of some drivers who are allowing themselves to become distracted.'

The fine for using a mobile at the wheel was raised in May to £100 with three penalty points.
