A gang of around 10 Asian men robbed two people in a Hanley park before fleeing with mobile phones and a Nintendo DS hand-held games console.
Police are now hunting the thugs, who struck at Hanley's Central Forest Park on Saturday.
The two male victims were surrounded by the gang and, after a short conversation, were made to hand over their possessions.
Police said the gang assaulted the victims before making off towards Hanley town centre. The offenders are described as wearing black and white hoodies with tracksuit bottoms.
The victims were not badly injured.
Witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting incident 528 of December 28.
