Will Blackberry 9720 Sway Market Opinion?

BlackBerry Phone

Raheem Akingbolu asks if the new Blackberry 9720, which is said to be an upgrade of curve 7 will change the negative perception about the shortcomings of the brand

Since 2001, when the telecommunication industry was deregulated, operators of the Global System of Mobile (GSM) Communications and the promoters of various mobile devices have literally turned Nigerian market to battle ground. Though Nokia has consistently maintained a lead in the market, early players like Sagem, Motorrola, Ericson and a host of others also won a large chunk of the market share. Then, having a phone was not only a necessity but a status symbol sort of.

As the market grows, the trend changed and gave birth to i-phones, blackberry and other sophisticated devices. With more features and provision of interactive platforms, the profile of blackberry shored-up and it became the toast of the upper class. However, within a short time, Blackberry became a subject of criticism. Among other flaws, the device was condemned for the weakness of its battery.

Knowing well that the shortcomings was capable of dwindling its fortunes, the manufacturers had a few months ago, gone back to the drawing board and came out with BlackBerry 9720 as the latest BB phone running BlackBerry 7 OS. According to them, it is an upgrade to the Blackberry Curve 7, with a more brilliant touch display and a better camera. A glance at the new device shows a nice physical keyboard, which gives patrons the modern touch and type experience.

In a recent statement issued in Lagos, it was stated that 'although BB10 is here, BlackBerry has not been able to make them affordable enough for emerging markets like Nigeria; hence the company had to look towards the older BB7 when it wanted to build a cheaper smart phone. BlackBerry 9720 runs on BlackBerry 7.1 OS with an 806MHz processor with 512MB RAM,'

The new BlackBerry 9720 features a large 2.8-inch touch display, which is same size as the once top in Blackberry Bold 9900. The two phones are also about the same size. But in BlackBerry 9720 BB, it is believed that fans will be getting a decently sized touch display at a more affordable price.

As things are, BlackBerry 9720 is seen as a good value smart phone and considering the specs advances, it is probably the best value BlackBerry smart phone for a long time. Analysts believe that if the phone performs smoothly it will do well in the marketplace.

In a chat with THISDAY, an expert, Mr. Godwin Anyebe, who specialises in phone sales and repairs admitted that it may not be enough to save BlackBerry, but argued that if BB continues to build phones like this, at lower price points, there may still be hope for the company.

'Among other features, it has 2.8 inches touch display, which can continuously be used for seven hours talk time. It also has internal storage of 512 megabytes with a 5mega pixel of camera quality.

To me, this may be the solution to the crisis the brand is currently facing in the market,' he said.
